Compare CAGR not absolute returns.
How to read your result
CAGR smooths a volatile multi-year return into a single average annual rate β it's useful for comparing investments over the same period, but it hides the actual year-to-year volatility along the way, which matters if you might need to withdraw during a down year.
β οΈ Common Mistakes
β Assuming CAGR means the investment grew by that exact percentage every single year.
β CAGR is a smoothed average β the actual path likely included some years well above and some well below this figure. Two investments with identical CAGR can have very different real-world volatility.
β Comparing CAGR figures calculated over different time periods as if they're equivalent.
β A 3-year CAGR and a 10-year CAGR aren't directly comparable β shorter periods are more sensitive to the specific start/end dates chosen, which can flatter or understate an investment depending on timing.
